Casual: Nords (Extune, Daniel) vs W’adrhun (Frazni, Lukas) vol. 2

It wouldn’t be a successful gaming night, would we play only one match! So after my loss I decided to challenge Lukas for a rematch. This time with a complete different list, all about tempo and creating space and distance for myself.

=== The Last Argument of Kings ===

Shocking Impacts [2000/2000]
Nords

== (Warlord) Vargyr Lord [150]: Massive Frame, Call the Hunt

 * Werewargs (3) [160]:

 * Werewargs (3) [160]:

 * Werewargs (3) [160]:

 * Goltr Beastpack (3) [165]:

== Blooded [135]: Figurehead of the Naglfar, Vicious Assault

 * Ugr (3) [150]:

 * Ugr (3) [150]:

 * Fenr Beastpack (3) [140]:

 * Goltr Beastpack (3) [165]:

== Shaman [100]: Coils of the Serpent

 * Ulfhednar (4) [200]: Shield Biter

 * Bearsarks (3) [165]: Shield Biter

This time the goal was simple: get up the table and get up fast. The Vargys warlord gives me impacts which can’t be stopped and a complete face smashing in his surpremacy turn for all half bloods. Because Shock and Fury are nice!
Backed up by some Fenr and Ulfhednar for Turn 2 scoring and a few supporting pieces in Goltr and Ugr as second wave.

Testing CoD [2000/2000]
The W'adrhŭn

== (Warlord) Scion of Conquest [120]: Drum Beast Rider

 * Drum Beast (1) [270]:

 * Blooded (3) [130]:

 * Blooded (3) [130]:

 * Blooded (3) [130]:

== Matriarch Queen [110]: Death, Cure

 * Hunters (3) [150]:

 * Chosen of Death (5) [350]:

== Scion of War [160]: Vision

 * Chosen of War (4) [270]:

 * Warbred (3) [180]:

Lukas also tried out something different: a Chosen of Conquest on a Drum Beast as a nice supporting piece to support the big brick of Matriach Queen in Chosen of Death. Followed by Chose of War within a Scion of War again and some supporting pieces.

We played the same scenario: Maelstrom again!

You gotta contest and control at least the middle and one other zone. If you fall behind too far, its hard to catchup because there are no bonus points for Warlord/Regiment kills!

Turn 1

So at the start of the reinforcement phase it was quite clear ow much speed I possessed: One Werewarg came as a pick, another flanked through the mastery and the other one I rolled onto the table. Nice!
His hunter were pretty defensively at the right hand side, behind a forrest and I marched forward with all three units.

Waiting for some fresh Orc meat….

Turn 2

Choosing to stall out as much as I could because I had a tremendous card advantage: I got another picked regiment of Ugr, took Goltr as my choice for the mastery, got flanking Fenr and rolled Ulfhednar in. Lukas only got a single regiment of his Chosen of Death (proxied by some braves here) in, that was it.

Trying to stall out a bit, I wanted to activate my reinforcing Ugr in the middle and my Ulfhednar with Shaman on the right side. As backup to score the zone whereas my Werewargs would rush forward. Fenr scored at the outermost edge the left hand zone and were uncontested there. My Werewargs where not fully rushing forward, because I wouldn’t want to use my surpremacy already on turn 3 without some second wave Ugr/Goltr in place.
His Hunters went more backwards and his Chosen of Death took some courage and hid in the forrest.

Scoring for one point for Nords 1:0 W’adruhn

Just some nice fluffy wolves, touching the zone enough to score, yummy!

Turn 3

Okay so I brought the rest of my army onto the table: picked the heavy Bearsarks, took one more Ugr as my mastery pick and rolled the last medium Goltr in. 13 Cards turn 3, I liked that a lot!
Lukas got his flanked Chosen of War, picked his Drum beast with Scionand got 2 more medium Blooded, starting to get some bits and pieces of his army but still was heavily outactivated.
My goal was to setup my Werewargs and my second wave to smash some faces next turn.

That was also what basically happened. Lukas tried to play a declined flank on the left side, only coming onto the table with some Blooded. Here I just carefully positioned my Fenr a bit so if he wanted to charge next turn they would open up their flank for my incoming Bearsarks. I didn’t want to commit more models here so my Goltr swapped their facing and turned mor to the mid.
In the middle his CoW marched up, my Ugr touched the middle zone as the were able to position themselves right behind the Werewargs before I need to move them (I was happy to leave some space for them last turn, positioning win for me yay) and I reinforced the middle with more Ugr behind the Ugr!
On the right side I had put my Ulfhednar a bit too early in my activation and I was too scared to hop over my Werewargs to actually touch the zone, keeping them back (positioning mistake for me here, damn) and some Goltr took up the space right next to the Ulfhednar. The last activation where my Werewargs and I had free reign to march all of them into 8′ right in front of some of his regiments: my goal was to get his CoD + MQ block and try to decimate it, because I knew how scary the healing + Chosen of War where!

Scoring went 3 points to Nords for a 4:0 for Nords.

The Ugr bois waiting for something to eat up!

The careful observer sees the wounded Werewarg here, he got shot by the Scion of Conquest. This will matter a lot!

Turn 4

Okay gameplan for turn 4 was simple: Go for the throat! Activating my surpremacy and trying to get some juicy kills.
I lost the supremacy but my hand was simple: Werewargs in the front then stalling and then my regiment who are in position for countercharging last (Goltr/Ugr)

Damn! I wanted the first turn here!

So we both where thinking a lot about our card picks and I was thinking if Lukas wins he would also activate his surpremacy, but he wasn’t to my surprise. He took the win on the surpremacy and activated his Drum Beast march charging into my Werewargs. Impacts and Trample later, my Werewargs survived on 6 Wounds, however his Drum Beast was forced to move because the wounded Werewarg by his spell was the first to die. This opened up the rear of the Drum Beast which mattered a lot later.
Then came my pick and I took some time to think, however I chose my Wargs+Vargyr Lord and did what I setout to do: Charging the Chosen of Death!
9 Impacts from Wargs, 6 from the Vargyr on Clash 3/4 thanks to Shock, 22 Attacks with C4, Flurry and 7 Attack with C4+RR6es Cleave 1 and Terrifying 1 later and the Chosen of Death where history. Evaporated the nearly 500 points. Ouch! That was crazy output.
My opponent wasn’t quite sure what happened and activated his blooded on the far right side to finish of my wounded Wargs.
I picked my second Wargs and charged his Drum Beast in the rear. Another round of bloodshed and 21 wounds on the Drum Beast thanks to the new rear morale mechanic later, another shock.
Then the round was quite simple: I stalled long enough and Lukas hat to do and try anything. He march+charged his CoW forward to get on the zone, otherwise I could easily block him off my Ugr.
The CoW got clashed by Ugr and Goltr and melted, leaving only one wounded stand there.
On the right side he reinforced with Warbred and tried to deny me scoring with the blooded and I march charged into them with Bearsarks while leavin my Fenr a bit behind to stay out of Juggernaut of his Warbred.
Scoring this turn went 3 points for Nords, 2 points for W’adruhn for a 7:2 for the Nords.

After a quick chat and looking at his remaining army, we decided to cut it short and talked it through.
The left hand side was won by me, his Blooded would either die by Bearsarks or Fenr.
The middle was done. And on the right hand side he had a Drum Beast with 5 wounds left, 2 units of Blooded against some Werewargs, Goltr and Ulfhednar, which could be a draw depending on whats happening but it wouldn’t matter too much.

A win for the new Nords! Yay!

Closing thoughts

Man, the setup with the Wargs was glorious and Fury+Shock on everything is just straight up face smashing if timed right. I think against a faster list this would not be as easy, as I could be pressured in deploying my surpremacy early and losing the bonuses. But this feels stroooong and really nice if you pull it off.
I was just thinking how much more Goltr and other Wargs I could squeeze into such a list haha!

Great game as always against Lukas, always a pleasure!

Hope you enjoyed this smaller war report of the game right after the update.
See you in Eä
