Casual Game: Hannes (Dweghom) vs Frazni (Weavers)

Long time no see, lovely people!
I was really busy over the course of summer, since I am travelling a lot for work during the summer months. But now I am back and I – of course – will provide some battle reports!

We as KaiserConquest will soon be attending the AmuletD20 Grand Tournament. It is, in fact, the biggest tournament yet to be held for Conquest! This means that we will start preparing our lists and do some bootcamps to get ready!
Before that, I wanted to play some warm-up games, since I hadn’t played in a while. I went for a more thematic list and just wanted to play some autumn-weavers again. The lore of my own weavers ties them to the autumn court, so I really like playing autumn somehow 😀

I played against Hannes, who is one of our newer members but, at the same time, really fell into the game and already played like 15 to 20 games within three months or something – it’s crazy.

We played the Flames of Conquest scenario with the suggested terrain layout. It’s the one scenario in which you can burn objective zones – I really do like this scenario!

Round 1

He gets everything – all the Berzerkers and the Balistae with mage. I also get everything. Pretty much standard stuff.

Round 2

While I reinforce five units onto the table, Hannes manages to get only his one declared unit onto the battlefield – which are the Lost with attached character.
This is obviously good for me and bad for him. He correctly plays a very passive round, since he does not want to feed me his units one by one. He needs to concentrate his force in one turn and not over commit – really clever.

I score a lot of points for holding all three zones, while he cannot hold a single zone.

Round 3

I get everything on the table, as well as Hannes. Now we have a game to be played!

He marches all his units onto the table and wants to slap face really hard next turn. I score points and not a lot happens this turn… I sadly forgot to take a photo, but it was a super quick turn, since he played so passively.

Round 4

Start your engines people, now things go crazy! First of all, it’s autumn – so let’s give this a try!

On the left flank I am able to kill one unit of Berzerkers with shooting from the wardens and the Kern. Yes, they already got damaged the previous turn, so no, it’s not that crazy.

The other unit of Berzerkers got killed by Wyrd Knights, who got flurry and obliterated them easily.

But he pushed his Wardens with Kerawegh forward and – as a last activation – charged his Lost into my Kern with Rhun Sidhe on a 4+ with unstoppable.

In the center I shoved up the Fianna to prowl a bit and stop the centermost wardens from getting on my zone. Or at least I tried. Thanks to a charge from the other unit of Lost at the right flank, the Fianna sadly lost prowl. Which allowed the Tempered Sorcerer to throw a Fireball into the Fianna and the followup of the Balistae was enough to kill the whole unit. What. the. hell.

Now his Wardens reigned free and marched onto my zone, contesting it and threatening my Wardens with mage. Awesome.

On the right flank, he charged his Lost with Ancestor into my Whisps. He knows that this is a bad charge, but the idea is simple. He wants to start trading unit for unit. He destroys the Whisps of course, but now I have two options: Charge their flank with Wyrd Knights, or charge their front with the draic. If I go for the Knights, they will die due to Lethal Demise and Die Fighting from the Ancestor. If I do the Draic, he can then threaten the rest of my units.

So I go for the Draic, who glides in and thanks to Fiend Hunter, Cleave and Autumn “The Culling” is able to destroy the whole unit. Abundant Harvest triggers (HA!) and I give out some seeds. But now retaliation is at hand. A million Lethal Demise and Die Fighting later (the Ancestor was not in contact with my draic thankfully) I took 10 wounds. Awesome.

I only scored two zones now and Hannes burned the zones on both of his flanks, while I burned the zone on my right flank.

Round 5

Its Supremacy turn for him – and I will suffer.

The Wardens on my left handside crush into the Wyrd Knights, leaving not even a single Knight behind.

At this point, it is already a bit late, so we start doing some math. The right flank is over. He trades his wardens for the Wyrd Knights and I trade take the Wardens with my Draic. So the right handside is neutralized since there are no zones to be scored anymore.

It basically comes down to the Wardens fighting my Wardens in the center. We decided to roll it. He charges in and kills one and a half of my bug-people. I go with the mage and throw in a heat haze, collecting some seeds to go to 8 dice. I very luckily manage to kill exactly one stand worth of his wardens! Now my Gallowglass Wardens can activate and since I outscore him, I can burn the objective zone beneath them. Thanks to this move, there are not enough zones and points on the battlefield anymore for Hannes to win the game.

We shake hands and call it a very good night of Conquest!

Final thoughts

Hannes’ reinforcements on turn 2 were very unlucky. But he did the right thing and played passively and waited for his reinforcements to arrive.

So we basically played the game starting turn 4, which is fine. He stayed outside of shooting distance and let me score points. Right move, but it puts pressure onto him.

Ardent plays such a different game, its crazy. But at the same time, I find it very one-dimensional. If you know how to answer it (and have tools to do so) it is very beatable. But it can be so very oppressive 😀

I don’t have a lot of thoughts on my Weavers list, since I played what I wanted to put on the table. The Scatacha Hunters did nothing of course. I really want to love them (and I finished painting them!), but I would rather invest 10 points more and get a Wyrd Knights unit, or 10 points less and get Fianna. Both are simply better. But again, I like my autumn units – god damn Para Bellum, why are you doing this to me?!

The Fianna – again – underperformed like crazy. I again could not manage to use them well and they died a horrible death. Somewhen I will use them correctly and be amazed by this unit – but this day will not be soon!

Now I will start preparing for AmuletD20 and tinker with some list ideas. I am not sure yet what to play exactly, since there are a lot of viable builds in Weavers right now. Maybe I will do a small write-up after list submission about my list or something, let’s see. I definitely will do a full tournament report!
